WHAT DOES YAHWEH SHAMMAH MEAN?

Yahweh Shammah is a name of God which, in Hebrew means that GOD IS THERE. (written in a very definite tone). We see the necessity of the fact that Christians need to realize that God is in our midst and that He is still in control! Even though we might experience tribulations, God is more that capable to help us through our wilderness eras! We might experience dry times in our spiritual lives, but He is still there for us, and after all, He’s on our side. Isn’t it wonderful to know that we have a Father that will ceaselessly help us out, and that we are never alone (because of His precious Holy Spirit’s presence)?

When prophecies were uttered, using this particular Name of the God of Israel, it was usually during captivity, in the land of their humiliation and sorrow. When God made Himself known to them under this Name, it was usually to announce to them that they had been purged of all the old abominations, and that the judgment had lifted.

This Name of God also unfuried His righteousness, holiness, wholeness triumph, and healing power, to the Israelites, especially in the desert or in captivity, so many times, it also had an eschatological meaning as well, looking forward to the promised land and preparing for it. God wants us to live righteous, be holy, be made whole, live in His triumph, and be healed (spirit, soul and body) by His awesom power! We believe that God is busy cleansing, raising up, and equipping His Church, so that she will be able to reap His mighty harvest.

The following extract from Lester Sumrall’s book, “The Names of God” gives a further explanatory on this Name: The last verse of Ezekiel’s prophecy gives us an intriguing Name for God. Notice what the prophet says concerning the nature of the New Jerusalem which God revealed to him in a vision: “It was round about eighteen thousand measures, and the name of the city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THERE (YAHWEH SHAMMAH) (Ezek 48:35)

God revealed that this would be the Name of the Holy City when He restores her to her former glory. But this is not only a Name for the New Jerusalem; this is a Name thst reveals much about the nature of God Himself.
